What is Podcasting? Rich media for mobile devices
Podcasting is one of the fastest growing areas on the web. Briefly, it’s a way of delivering audio and images that can be replayed on mobile devices. However, you don’t need to have an iPod to play a Podcast. Any MP3 player (and that includes almost every PC, Mac, and PDA) can play a Podcast.
Originally Podcasts were limited to audio only and the format still works well for conference presentations that need to be delivered to people who want to listen only. And with so many presentations using graphics purely as bullet points, the absence of the visual channel is no great loss.
PowerPoint Podcasting
More recently PowerPoint Podcasting has introduced the option to display PowerPoint slides on the iPod video screen - synchronised to the audio. Each slide can be indexed as a chapter allowing users to quickly navigate to a particular section of a presentation. Ipod screens (particularly on the incredible small Nano) are not large enough to display detailed PowerPoint slides, but they work very well with bold photos and graphics with limited text. Some features of PowerPoint Podcasts may not be available to certain mobile players, those without suitable screens, for instance. And some non-iPod players may require an additional software update to play the audio.
Podcast production
Most of the production work involved in creating a Podcast is already done during the standard production process to create a World Presenter online presentation. So it makes good economic sense to produce a PowerPoint Podcast at the same time. Your customers then have the option to play World Presenter on PC, Mac or laptop and play the Podcast on a mobile device.
